'50年代に、それまで目立たない楽器だったハープ(ハーモニカ)を、シカゴ・ブルースにかかせないものにした革命家。アンプを使って音を増幅させたハープを、サックスのように激しく吹き鳴らし、戦後ブルースの巨人に。しかし、1950年代中盤以降、彼の人気は凋落の一途をたどり、1968年にケンカの傷がもとで亡くなってしまった。一世を風靡したマディ・ウォーターズのサウンドを、マディジミー・ロジャースとともに作り上げた。またフレッド・ビロウ、ロバート・ジュニア・ロックウッドらをバックに、ソロ・アーティストとしても活動。インストゥルメンタル曲「ジューク」など名曲を残す。
